Getting Started with Reselling

Your first resale should teach you what buyers want and what a sale actually costs. Start with an item you already own or a small order you can afford to test. A sale is useful evidence; a promise of easy income is not.

Choose a product you can assess

Pick a category where you can check condition, identify the exact model and describe faults. Clothing you can measure or books you can identify by edition may be easier to assess than electronics you cannot test.

Look at recent sold listings in the market where you intend to sell. Match the condition, size, model and included accessories. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive; completed sales give you a more useful starting point. Keep a short record of comparable items and their delivered prices.

The product research guide gives you a repeatable way to narrow your shortlist.

Work out the costs before buying

Write down the purchase cost, inbound delivery, packaging, outbound delivery and the fees that apply to your account. Leave room for returns, damaged stock and unsold items. The difference between the purchase price and selling price is not all profit.

For a hypothetical sale at $30, stock costing $12, delivery costing $5, packaging costing $1 and selling fees of $3 leave $9 before other expenses and tax. These are example figures, not a marketplace fee quote. Replace each one with your actual costs.

Check your supplier

Ask for the exact product specification, total delivered cost and the return process before paying. For branded goods, keep evidence of the source and authenticity. Order a small sample and compare it with what was promised before committing to a larger quantity.

A paid contact or a low price does not prove a supplier is reliable. Use the supplier checklist to compare offers on the same terms.

Create an accurate listing

Choose a marketplace that supports your location and product category, then complete its seller requirements. Photograph the actual item, including wear and labels. Give the measurements, condition and what is included. Use only photos you own or have permission to use.

Start with a realistic dispatch time and a delivery service you can use. The listing guide includes a title and description example you can adapt.

Deliver and review the result

Confirm payment inside the marketplace or payment provider before dispatching. Keep the order record and tracking evidence. For local collection, agree the details through the marketplace and follow its collection guidance.

After the sale, record the actual payout, all costs, time spent and any refund. Use that result to decide whether to buy the same item again. Increase the order size only when the numbers and the product quality support it.
