Product Listing Guide

A listing should answer the buyer's practical questions: what the item is, what condition it is in, what is included and what the total purchase will cost.

Write a specific title

Use the real product type, model, size and color where relevant. Add a brand only when it accurately describes the item. Avoid repeated keywords and unrelated brand names.

For an unbranded cotton shirt, a useful title could be Men's cotton short-sleeve shirt, navy, size M. This gives a buyer more information than “best quality shirt” without inventing a brand or feature.

Show the actual item

Use clear photos in even light. Show the front, back, labels, included accessories and any wear or damage. For clothing, show measurements and describe how they were taken. For electronics, photograph the model information and explain what you tested.

Use images you own or have permission to use. Do not hide defects, blur branding to disguise the item or use another seller's photos as if they show your stock.

Describe condition and contents

Choose the condition that matches the item. Include faults in both photos and the description. A concise description is useful when it contains the facts needed to buy.

Unbranded navy cotton shirt, labelled size M. Chest measures 54 cm across when laid flat. Used, with a small mark near the lower hem shown in the final photo. Shirt only. Washed and ready to wear.

This is an example, not a description to paste onto an unchecked item. Replace every measurement and condition statement with your own observations.

Fill in the marketplace's item specifics and the correct category. eBay's listing guidance explains how accurate details and product identifiers help buyers find matching items.

Price the complete offer

Compare similar sold items, including delivery, and calculate your own costs. Leave room for any offers you plan to accept. A lower item price does not look cheaper if the delivery charge makes the total higher.

State the dispatch time you can meet and use the marketplace's delivery and return settings. Do not promise same-day dispatch, warranty coverage or a delivery date you cannot support.

Review before publishing

Read the listing on a phone and check that the first photo and opening lines identify the item clearly. Review AI-generated drafts for invented materials, origin, condition or performance claims. You are responsible for the published details.

Check the marketplace's product rules. eBay does not permit counterfeit goods; selecting “used” or “customized” does not make a counterfeit listing acceptable.

After publication, use the listing views guide to understand actual buyer activity and decide what to improve.
